At Acomb First School, we believe that all children are entitled to an education which allows every child to achieve their potential regardless of their starting point in life or personal circumstances. Pupil Premium is additional funding to main school funding, designed to address the current underlying national inequalities between disadvantaged children (those  eligible for free school meals (FSM), looked after children and service family children)  and other children. Schools are currently given an additional £1345 per pupil.

Which pupils are entitled to Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) is provided to all schools to support pupils within the following categories:

  • Pupils who are currently registered for Free School Meals.
  • Pupils who have been registered for Free School Meals at any point during the last six years;
  • Pupils in the care of a Local Authority;
  • Pupils who have been adopted but have been looked after for one day or more, or were adopted from care on or after 30th December 2005 and left care under:
  • A Special Guardianship Order on or after 30th December 2005
  • A Residence Order on or after 14th October 1991
  • Pupils whose parents are serving with the UK Armed Forces

What is Pupil Premium spent on?

The decision about how the individual schools use their Pupil Premium is left to each school with the expectation that they will close the gap in attainment and progress between those eligible and other children nationally. “It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.” (DfE).

Therefore, schools are free to spend the PPG as they see fit. However, they will be held accountable for how they have used the additional funding to support these pupils.

In Autumn 2021,  EEF Guide to the Pupil Premium was updated by the Education Endowment Foundation which support schools in spending their Pupil Premium to maximise the benefit for their students. The report recommends school take a tiered approach to Pupil Premium spending. Teaching should be the top priority, including professional development, training and support for early career teachers and recruitment and retention. Targeted support for struggling pupils should also be a key component of an effective Pupil Premium strategy; as well as strategies that relate to non-academic factors, including improving attendance, behaviour and social and emotional support.  As a school we have used the information and research within this report to guide our spending of Pupil Premium money.

Government's Policy Paper on Pupil Premium - Updated on 16th December 2021

The extra funding has been used to fund the following strategies:

Professional development for teachers and support staff

To provide trained support staff (Learning support assistants)

To provide short and medium term intervention programmes supporting individuals in their learning

To support individual pupils in their personal, social and emotional development

To provide specific equipment for individual pupils to support their learning

The interventions and support provided are reviewed half termly to assess the impact on children's progress. Teaching and support staff meet together and the interventions are reviewed and then planned for the next half term.

Please see the attached strategy statements.

Sports Premium

Purpose of funding

The government provides  this funding to schools for a specific purpose.  Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but have the freedom to decide how to best develop this area for now and the future.

Possible uses for the funding might include:

  • hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE
  • supporting and engaging  the least active children through new or additional Change4Life clubs
  • paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
  • providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport
  • running sport competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games
  • buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE and sport

providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs and holiday clubs pooling the additional funding with that of other local schools.

Our School

At Acomb first school we provide physical activity during the school day and plan to introduce further physical activity as extra-curricular opportunities.  PE develops a pupil’s physical competence and confidence enabling them to perform a wide range of activities. We also aim for PE to develop a pupil’s health and fitness leading to an enjoyable and enduring healthy lifestyle.

Our vision is to raise the aspirations of all pupils regardless of athletic talent, physical / mental ability encouraging proficiency in motor skills to perform a variety of physical activities in order to pursue a healthy and active lifestyle now and in the future.

 The school currently provides at least 2 hours of PE.

Children visit Wentworth Leisure Centre where they take part in swimming. PE is taught in school; we have indoor and outdoor facilities including an appropriately equipped modern school hall, a large school field and a well surfaced playground to ensure PE takes place whatever the weather.

Successful and enjoyable PE has several benefits and impacts across the curriculum and upon a child’s attitudes and behaviours.

Our PE Curriculum

Our PE curriculum includes a wide range of activities which aims to inspire and include all pupils.

Partnership work;

Our school takes part in festivals and competitions including the Northumberland School games and partnership Top Link festival.  We also provide the opportunity for some children to take part in the Swimathon charity event.
